Neolithic settlers introduced agriculture by 6500 BC; the Minoan (c. 2700–1450 BC) and Mycenaean (c. 1600–1100 BC) civilizations preceded the Greek Dark Ages. By the 8th century BC, city-states (poleis) formed, leading to the Classical era’s democracy, philosophy, and the Persian Wars.
Alexander the Great’s conquests (334–323 BC) spread Hellenistic culture across three continents. Rome annexed Greece in 146 BC; Christianity became entrenched by the 4th century, and the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, centered at Constantinople, lasted until 1453.
Most of Greece fell under Ottoman control by 1569; the Greek Revolution (1821–1829) led to independence and the establishment of the modern Hellenic Republic in 1830.
Greece expanded territorially through the Balkan Wars and World Wars, joined the EU in 1981, adopted the euro in 2001, weathered a debt crisis (2009–18), and today is a parliamentary republic with a growing tourism- and service-based economy
